With the 2025 NHL Draft fast approaching, the Chicago Blackhawks are sitting on a valuable asset: the No. 3 overall pick. And unsurprisingly, several teams are making moves to try and trade up.
While early reports suggested the Blackhawks might be open to dealing the pick, that may no longer be the case. According to Scott Wheeler of The Athletic, Buffalo, the New York Rangers, and Pittsburgh Penguins have all held talks with Chicago about acquiring the third overall selection.
However, unless a team puts together a blockbuster offer, signs currently point to the Blackhawks holding firm. With elite prospects like James Hagens and Porter Martone expected to be available at No. 3, Chicago appears likely to keep the pick and add a dynamic piece to play alongside Connor Bedard.
Of the interested teams, the Penguins are especially intriguing, holding picks No. 11 and 12—but the perceived drop-off in talent beyond the top 10 may be too steep for Chicago to risk trading down.
Meanwhile, teams continue to push for a top-five spot in hopes of landing one of the draft’s premier names like Frondell, Misa, Desnoyers, Hagens, or Martone. So while the Blackhawks’ stance seems firm for now, don’t be shocked if the pressure ramps up in the final hours before the draft.
